Why What You Resist Persists

Why What You Resist Persists

I recently watched a YouTube video with a cool guy called Neale Donald Walsch, and something he said really stood out to me. “What you resist persists”. Although I’d come across the quote before I wasn’t quite sure of the source, and I have to say it’s profound.

Over the years, like many people, I’ve tried to resist challenges in different aspects of my life such as health, lifestyle and relationships. When you don’t feel strong enough to change or you simply don’t know how to make peace with the past, you put on the metaphoric blinkers as you skirt past the elephant in the room.

But let me tell you, it doesn’t work. Whether you’re struggling on a physical, mental or emotional level, ignoring a problem never made it go away. If not tackled, clutter in any aspect of our lives actually breeds and grows. Bottled up, it gains momentum and it whips itself up into something much bigger than it ever needed to be.

Understandably, we want to avoid the pain of sorting through our stuff. Although we sometimes convince ourselves that we’re not affected by what’s around us, at a deeper level we’re picking up on it and it’s making us feel flat, drained, and worse.

Neale Donald Walsch (who, incidentally, went from homeless and destitute to one of the world’s most influential authors after confronting his demons) follows on to say “What you look at goes away”. That is so true. Have you ever found how sharing a problem with a friend, shedding a mindful tear to your favourite song or simply clearing out a bedside drawer makes you feel better?

Although we may not like discomfort, it’s actually our friend as it gently prompts us to do something different, patiently waiting for us to change. We owe it to ourselves to be the happiest and most at peace we can be.

Is now your time to stop resisting and start looking? Please do share your comments with me below!
