Decluttering So I Could Walk The Dogs
It’s just over five years since I decided to leave my Team Lead role to focus on running my own business. I left the world of I.T. for a number of reasons – not least the urge to share my message and help others to declutter and let go so they can enjoy life more.
Some thought I was brave and I’m sure many thought I was crazy (it was in the middle of the Irish recession), but life has since taught me that we all need to live by our own rules and follow our individual paths – we actually can’t not, but that’s a post for another day. I know I would still be unfulfilled and miserable had I decided to wait around for the approval of the invisible “they”!
Don’t get me wrong – I loved numerous aspects of my role and many of the people I worked with, but there was an unlikely driving force behind my decision to leave a good and stable job. As I commuted to work at the same time every morning (about 8.00am) I remember feeling so jealous and even incredulous that there were people actually out walking their dogs. How did they have the time? Why were they not rushing to work too? Had they no-one to answer to? Were their clocks broken? Had they rang in sick? For me, that was the Holy Grail – being in a position to enjoy a relaxed walk with the dogs regardless of what day or time it was. The activity represented time and space that I didn’t feel I had. I wanted that freedom.
Decluttering So I Could Walk The Dogs – Kermit and Billie
Of course, I still have commitments and responsibilities today as someone who is self-employed, but I now have the flexibility to only do the things I find meaningful with the people I love. In leaving work one of my biggest challenges was to declutter and let go of how I had seen myself for over ten years – someone who was steadily climbing the corporate ladder – so I could make space for the real me. The me who values muddy fields, wellies and hairy dogs as much as a creative and fulfilling business.

Your dogs are so cute Breda – great reason to work for yourself!!! X
Ah thank you, Natalie – they are cute for sure. X
That’s a great reason to give up your job! I remember years ago working as a waitress and being so envious of people out for dinner on a Sunday with their family and friends. Now I really appreciate being able to go out for dinner and appreciate the waiting staff!
Hi Anne, thanks so much for your comment. Sunday is that day where you expect to be able do nice things with family and friends, so I can understand the envy! It’s lovely that it’s allowed you appreciate the experience even more! X
You are so right…it kills me seeing people doing nice things when I am on my way into work!!! Laura.
Thank you for the comment, Laura. What are we like! 🙂
Those dogs are awesome!!
Ah thank you Jessica – I do agree with you! Breda x
Great blogs, thank you!
Aw thank you Patsie! Breda x
