Choosing a Declutter Buddy

One question that seems to be coming up a lot is whether it’s better to declutter alone or with friends and family. As decluttering can be quite time-consuming and physically demanding this is a really valid query, and I wanted to revisit my thoughts on the subject.

Those closest to us generally mean very well, and it’s worth enlisting the support of anyone whom you’re confident will make the process quicker and easier for you. Aside from a bit of strength and stamina, it’s important your helper can support in a number of non-physical ways that you may not have considered.

When you’re faced with years-worth of decluttering and organising (and the tricky emotions that naturally come to the surface during such a process), with the right person’s help you shouldn’t feel any further guilt, embarrassment, regret, indecisiveness, doubt, disappointment or frustration.

Here’s what you need to look out for when requesting (or accepting) the help of a potential declutter buddy:

• Regardless of whether you share a similar size, shape, personal style or home style, they appreciate your individuality and they empower you to make the decisions that are right for your unique tastes and requirements
• They are more “positively honest” than critical
• They have a balanced approach to decluttering (aside from the obvious no-no of wanting you to keep everything, they are equally not notorious for “throwing everything out”!)
• They are more focused on helping you make progress than beady-eyeing everything you’ve finally decided to declutter for themselves (this happens a lot!)
• They walk the walk in terms of decluttering and organising their own living spaces and lives
• They can cope with any emotions or issues that may arise (decluttering is, above all, a “feeling process”), and they allow you to express yourself honestly without judgment
