No Decluttering Benefits

It’s no secret that creating awareness around the benefits of decluttering has been the driving force behind much of my work. From setting up National Declutter Day in 2011 and then International Declutter Day, working regularly with the media, writing my Declutter Therapy book, founding The Declutter Academy for professional decluttering training and even the original decisions around my business names “The Declutter Therapist™” and “Declutter Therapy™”, the fact that decluttering changes our lives for the better is, to me, simply indisputable!

I felt that so many of us associated decluttering with lack and deprivation, and not alone were most people mainly unaware of importance of decluttering, they were actually surprised to hear how much decluttering can positively change every area our lives, far beyond having a more spacious and streamlined wardrobe and home.

However, it’s not right for me to continually speak about the benefits of decluttering without adding a few caveats. There are some situations where we unfortunately just don’t benefit from decluttering.

No Decluttering Benefits

  • When someone else does it for us and we don’t learn or empower ourselves with the necessary knowledge and skills
  • When we don’t enjoy the process or we are doing it because we feel we “should”, and not because we want to
  • When we don’t gently identify any negative emotions that come up and try to understand and release them
  • When we declutter and ultimately create wardrobes or homes to others’ tastes or instructions
  • When we are dismissing decluttering as a simple cleaning or organising task, and not recognising the depth behind the “letting go”
  • When we are obsessively decluttering or organising
  • When we don’t distribute unwanted items meaningfully
  • When we don’t finish the process

It’s important to avoid the above pitfalls so you can truly transform your life long-term through decluttering. Every one of us deserves the wardrobe and home of our dreams. If you need help, you can learn about my The Declutter Academy Certified Professional Organizer.
